"How much does anemia mask your blood sugar numbers? A1C?"
Asked By: woodsie

Background Info Hide
I have been to all the specialists. They cannot find the cause of my anemia. My endocrinologist says it is important to find out what is causing my anemia. I cannot afford a clinic specializing in mystery diagnosis. Any suggestions? I am type 2, diabetic for 3 yrs. Take Metformin twice per day. Also take meds to control cholesterol, & blood pressure.

All glucose meters have an acceptable hematocrit range associated with the meter accuracy. You need to look in your owner's manual for your meter's range. Meter companies will not quarantee the accurancy of your results if you are so anemic that your hematocrit level is below this range. As to the AIC, you would need to consult with the lab where you have it done.// You sound frustrated. I'm sorry. Anemia is not a disease, it is a symptom, so I agree with your endocrinologist about the need to find out what is causing it. Don't give up, or you will never find the answers. Make sure to speak to your endocrinologist about your feelings and frustrations. I would also recommend getting additional educational and emotional support by seeing a certified diabetes educator and joining a local diabetes support group. Good luck.
