Hi and thanks for writing dLife. First, congratulations on your efforts....watching your food intake and exercising is certainly very helpful. However, it is important to realize that while watching your carbohydrate intake is certainly helpful in diabetes management, it is also important to realize that when it comes to weight loss, total calories still are the bottom line. Your carbohydrate intake may be well under control, but a significant source of calories also come from fat (butter, margarine, oils) and protein sources- especially fattier proteins such as bacon, sausage, and fatty meats. Also, it is also a good idea to examine not only what you eat, but how you eat. Do you eat regular meals and snacks? Sitting at a table instead of in front of a tv or computer? Any snacking in your car? Keeping a food intake diary carefully for a few days can answer a lot of questions. Also, consider your exercise level- planned exercise is great, but activity throughout the day is also very important. Consider meeting with a registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator who may be able to help you fine tune your diet along with reviewing your blood sugar logs. And also consider your sodium intake- while it doesn't add calories, a high sodium diet does contribute to water retention, which can aggravate weight status. Additionally, discuss your weight with your physician- it is possible that adjustment in medication may also be needed to assist in weight management- especially with a change in diet and exercise levels. I agree 75% with Janice, but it's an oversimplification to suggest that Calories are the bottom line. For example, if I ate (and properly digested) 1,850 Calories of broccoli, the results would be far different than if I ate 1,850 Calories of doughnuts. If you eat 500 Calories of super low-fat animal protein, you're likely to burn a tremendous amount in your body's engine rather than store it as fat, as would be the case with 500 Calories of French fries. Make sure your protein is high quality, your veggies are high fiber, and your workouts are as vigorous as your body will allow.

You can lose weight. Do not give up the fight for your very life and health. I was diagnosed in 2005 and lost 83 pounds only to lose my motivation and gained back 51 lbs. Now am on the weightloss trail again and feel great. Keep seeking to find out what will work for you. Don't ever throw in the towel. Bill

Something that worked for me and many I know, is keeping a food journal. So not just counting carbs, but calories too, to see exactly how much you are taking in. The type of exercise is essential too. Aerobic-type exercises alone did not help me lose weight. Great for sugar control, but not weight loss. It wasn't until I added strength and resistance training 2-3 days/week on top of the daily aerobic workouts that I finally started to drop weight. I love your effort so far...great A1C by the way! Hope this may help!

I was one hundred pounds over weight and I have aggressively watched my carb intake I have read every box ,can and label and you must remember just because it says sugar free the carbs are increased to add the flavor so read, read ,read, I have lost fifty- six pounds and you can too. I have been a licensed nurse for thirty years, And I lost the weight in three months you can to,
