My mom is 57 years old and not a diabetic. The only problem she has is asthma and she was on prednisone for about 4-6 weeks. Started with 40mg a week to taper 10 mg every week until Thursday. When she stopped her med she was complaning about headache and was found unconscious after midnight of 11/13/09. Her sugar was very low only 27 when paramedics checked. She went through so many tests and everything came ok. We were told that it was because of prednisone (the way it was tapperd) now she is home and on prednisone again started with 40 mg again and tappering down 5 mg every 2 days. I am worried that why would they put her on the same med if that was the cause of her condition? Are they experimenting on her to see how her body reacts this time? Please help me I am very concern about this matter.

Having been a pharmacist for over 30 years, I have seen many patients on prednisone tapers. I have never heard of a situation where the taper caused a patient with no known blood sugar issues to go so low. I would have your mom get a full work up for diabetes testing, such as a baseline A1C. I would also get her a glucose monitor to check blood sugars at home, especially while on prednisone. If blood sugars fluctuate a lot, I would suggest seeing an endocrinologist.
