Thanks for writing dLife. Terrific question- as triglycerides are a blood fat that often can become elevated in those with diabetes. Diet changes are also often very helpful for controlling triglyceride levels which preferable should remain below 150 mg/dl. First, be sure to minimize intake of high fat, fried foods. Cut way back on any sugary foods that may be part of your diet such as sweets, sodas and even fruit juices. And minimize - preferably avoid any alcoholic beverages, since this can also significantly elevate triglycerides. Regular exercise, which will help promote blood sugar and weight control as well, can also help but be sure to check with your physician before starting an exercise program. And lastly be aware of the amounts of all of the foods you eat because too many calories taken in per day, regardless of the source, will promote weight gain- specifically fat around the stomach area, which will in turn likely increase triglyceride levels. I encourage you to meet with a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator to plan a specific diet for your needs that you can stay with for the best results. Best of luck to you!
