Thank-you for contacting dLife- These medications are out there, but you are right you don't hear too much about them, depending on what part of the country you are from.

Perhaps the two biggest reasons are insurance co-pays and the advertisement push of the particular drug companies that make the medications.

Apidra is a rapid acting insulin that is taken at meal time and has a direct effect on the carbohydrates at the meal. It is well tolerated very effective and a equal competitor to Novolog or Humalog(rapid acting insulins made by 2 different companies.

Levemir is a basal insulin that is similar to Lantus. It is from the Novo nordisk company and widely used in Europe and slowly making its way to the US. Again the effectiveness is similar to Lantus and often, at least in our regional hospital, it is prescribed based on insurance and cost reimbursement.

Ultimately, it is nice to have choices in each type of insulin group to find the one that is the most effective for your self management. Stay well and self managed.
