"Is Metformin as effective if taken not at mealtimes? I have no side effects with it. Does it work better with meals?"
Asked By: albemarle

Background Info Hide
I take 2 - 500mg Metformin HCI, 1 in morning either before or after breakfast and 1 before bed. The timing is more convenient for me and fits with other medications. I also wanted to try & reduce my morning numbers, although I don't see any improvement by taking it before sleep. I am lucky and have no side effects from the Metformin.

Hello,

Thanks for bringing your question to dLife.

We typically recommend that metformin be taken with a meal to avoid stomach upset. Glad to hear that you have not experienced any side-effects of this diabetes medicine.

Metformin works best if taken in divided dosage and taken about 10-12 hours apart.

If you find that your morning blood glucose (sugar) consistently remain above target level, talk with your doctor. He or she can evaluate your treatment plan and make the appropriate adjustments.

Consider talking with a registered dietitian about establishing a meal and exercise plan. Healthful eating and regular physical activity are effective methods for improving blood glucose levels.

Take care.
