"Do I need to lose weight to get BMI down? I am 5'9" and weigh 196 lbs but am at 19.4% body fat and down to 34" waist."
Asked By: efkdad

Background Info Hide
Diagnosed November 2008 with A1C of 9.6, blood sugar 286, weight 250 (having already lost 12 pounds to the diabetes), waist 44", placed on Lantus 17 units at night. Started diet and exercise regime and lost an additional 54 pounds. Lantus discontinued and metformin introduced in June. In October (after A1C of 5.8) took myself off the Metformin. I am now 196 pounds, 19.4% body fat, 34" waist, completely diet and exercise controlled and a self-admitted exercise junkie.

Hello efkdad
Wow. You have done a great job self-managing your diabetes! I am not sure of your sex but am going to guess you are a man from your name. Waist size of 40 inches or less is recommended. Your current BMI is 28.9 which is in the overweight range but all these parameters have their limits! If you are muscular, your height weight ratio is going to be different then someone of the same height and weight that is flabby!

Keep up the great work.
