I have had diabetes for 20yrs. It has affected every organ other than my Kidneys. I also have Hemachrometosis which is separate from the diabetes. I am on the insulin pump, and had the yearly flu shot & a pneumonia booster shot two weeks ago. I was reading on the CDC gov. site which said diabetics should not get the shot? My PC said it was up to me? It seems like everybody is "winging it" I live alone but do work in a retail environment.

Dear rkilmain: As you have already discovered, there is more than plenty of controversy about the H1N1 vaccine. Since, as your PCP stated, it is up to you, I'm sure you'll make the right decision. All I really have to offer is that I am also a type 1 and I got the vaccine late in October when it became available in my area. I have had no repercussions, other than a slightly sore shoulder for about 24 hours. I haven't lowered my standards to avoid contracting it, but I do have the satisfaction of knowing I've done and am doing all I can to protect myself. Good luck.
