Dear jfarrell80, It is possible that metformin shouldn't be taken when you are experiencing kidney stones. My husband has had many kidney stones. He recently had a very large one that wouldn't pass on its own. For a while his creatinine was above the normal level. Metformin is stopped when creatinine labs is elevated. So, ask your doctor more questions about your kidney health before stopping metformin. There are other drugs you could use, though, so don't feel like you are in a hopeless situation. Maybe glyburide or glipizide would be a better selection for you. Any there is always insulin, which won't harm your kidneys.
