Metformin is a diabetes medicine. It improves the body's sensitivity to insulin so that it will respond more appropriately. Metformin prevents the liver from adding glucose (sugar) into the blood stream.
Some women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are insulin resistent. Insulin resistance sometimes make conception more challenging. Metformin helps to decrease the insulin resistance.
Metformin has been shown to increase frequency of ovulations in PCOS. It is used in clinical practice to treat infertility.
How about for people without PCOS? Have no fear! It is safe for people with type 2 dabetes without fertility issues to take metformin.
Take care.
