You story is similar to that of my Father who now has diabetes as a result of necrotizing pancreatitis. In the case of my Father (who is coincidentally also a Vegetarian) insulin injections became necessary following several years of good blood glucose control without a need for insulin or medication. If your fasting blood glucose levels average 150 mg/dl, it is indication that your pancreas is no longer making adequate amounts of insulin, and insulin replacement is necessary. Taking medications to stimulate your pancreas to produce more insulin would not be helpful, as you want to protect any remaining pancreatic function by providing insulin so it is not overworked. If you continue to make a little insulin, smaller amount by injection is needed and you may be able to eat small meals without injecting. The most important thing for you to do is to get your blood glucose under control so you can live a long and healthy life. Best to You!
