Dear cdodge@faystonelementary.org, Thank you for your question regarding low-carb, high protein diets for weight loss. If you are overweight, and newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, it really doesn't matter that much which weight-loss diet you follow, as long as you count carbs and track your blood sugar. What is important is that you lose weight and exercise. High protein low carb diets have been shown to be effective at helping people lose weight. Some doctors even prefer them over the balanced diet I like to recommend to most of my patients. If you are concerned about lab values, just have your doctor do a general screen which includes your lipids, liver enzymes, and basic kidney labs (creatinine, urea nitrogen, etc.) I personally don't think you will find any real problems, but it may be reassuring for you to see that for yourself. Good luck on your efforts to lose weight. And remember to add an exercise program.
