Novolog is a Rapid acting insulin that begins working in your body within 15 minutes of injection, with a peak in action at around 1 to 1 ½ hours. Novolin R is a Regular insulin that begins working in your body after about 1 to 1 ½ hours, with a peak in action around 3 hours after injection. Rapid acting insulin is used to more closely match your bodies rise in blood glucose following a meal. Use of a Regular insulin does not allow for the tightened control provided by Rapid acting insulin, and may peak at times when your body does not need the insulin. It is never a good idea to change the brand or type of insulin you are using without discussing it with your Doctor. They may be able to help you find resources to obtain your insulin at lower cost, or help you determine if use of the insulin you have will compromise your blood glucose control.
