Background Info Hide
My husband has heart issues and needs to lose weight and when using a glycemic recipe, is the net carbs given the same as total carbs that we have always counted? If not, how do we do both? She needs to lose 15 -20 pounds and the glycemic index diet would be simpler for us all to use if appropriate.

Dear flgators, When reading a label, the net carbs would probably be most accurate for your son to use to determine how much insulin to give himself. Net carbs subtract the sugar alcohols and fiber from the total carbs. Lower glycemic index foods may result in your son needing a little bit less insulin. At first, it would be wise to have him test a little more often to be sure he isn't going low unexpectedly. If he needs more calories, increase the portions of the low glycemic index foods or add some bread or juice to his meal. (not yours) They are higher glycemic index foods that will keep his blood sugar a bit higher.
