"why is the fasting sugar higher than the range while PP sugar is only trace higher?"

When my diabetes was detected for the first time 10 weeks back, my fasting sugar was 163 and PP was 203. Now, testing after two months of non-traditional medication and diet regime, my fasting sugar is 125 whereas PP is nearly borderline i.e. 143. What is the precise medical reason why the fasting sugar is so high whereas the PP sugar has come down to nearly within the range?

Thanks for writing dLife! Your question is one that commonly comes up and can be quite confusing for many. It would seem that fasting blood sugar levels, especially first thing in the morning should be naturally lower. However, our body naturally has a system which influences hormone levels in a specific pattern throughout the day. One of these patterns includes the release of hormones that signal the liver to send glucose out into the blood in the early morning hours. If our insulin production is inadequate, or if the insulin that our body makes is not used well (this is known as insulin resistance), then the morning blood sugar levels may be above the desired range. Insulin resistance can be very effectively treated with weight loss (specifically abdominal fat loss, by reducing caloric intake), increase in physical activity every day- such as walking and strength/resistance exercise, as well as with medications. Fine tuning your diet with the help of a registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator can really make a big difference, as well and an increase in physical activity. Review your blood glucose records with your physician so you can both come up with the best options specific to you for the best control of your blood sugar levels.
