Dear csickler, When a child is diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, it is expected that the parents will have many questions. Of course, you want your child to lead a normal life and be happy. If I were you, I wouldn't look for other illnesses until they appear. Why look for trouble? It is true that someone who has 1 automimmune disease is at a higher probablility to develop another one. I would recommend that you keep regular appointments with your child's physician and report any unusual symptoms. Don't allow your fears to be detected by your child. It is important that he be treated like other children. I know that is hard, but in time, you will have more knowledge of diabetes and the treatments for it and hopefully will be able to discuss your concerns with the child's doctor at the appropriate times.
