Dear xaznprinzezzx, Thank you for your question. It would be helpful if I had more information about you. I don't know if you have type 1 or 2 diabetes. We commonly compute insulin to carb ratios for type 1 diabetes, but not as often for people who have type 2. In type 1, each unit of insulin has a definite effect on lowering blood sugars. If a person keeps good records regarding the carbohdyrate intake at each meal, the time the meal was eaten, the exercise amount and time, and the units and type of insulin given, a doctor or diabetes educator should be able to help you determine the insulin to carb ratio. Why we don't use it much in Type 2, is that people are much more insulin resistant, and 1 unit of insulin doesn't usually make that much difference in the glucose numbers. Ask your doctor if he/she can help you. If not, ask for a referral to an experienced diabetes educator.
