Hello,

Thanks for bringing your question to dLife. Your fiance is fortunate to have your support.

Beverages that do not increase blood glucose (sugar) include artificially sweetened drinks, such as non-caffeinated diet sodas, Crystal Light, herbal teas, decaffeinated teas, decaffeinated coffee, artificially-sweetened flavored water, etc. Beverages can be sweetened with artificial sweeteners such as Splenda, Equal, etc.

Since caffeine can increase blood glucose (sugar) levels, it is best to limit foods and beverages containing caffeine.

There are many factors associated with the onset of type 2 diabetes. Healthful eating alone may not prevent its development.

I recommend that your fiance talk with a registered dietitian about establishing an individualized meal and exercise plan. He or she can help him to figure out what and how much to eat to better control his blood glucose levels.

Consider accompanying him to the diabetes education sessions so that you can also learn more about diabetes management.

Take care.
