Morning SageCanoe: Very good question and I appreciate your proactive concern as to the "WHY" should I get this vaccination. The literature and available reviews all suggest, "the vaccine is recommended for those at higher risk: i.e. specific to chronic diseases such as diabetes".

Factors to influence the blood sugars :

  • food
  • activity
  • medications
  • and especially" illness or injury". When you are sick, your body is stressed, this illness triggers a hyermetabolic hormonal milieu, (super stress) and the counter regulatory hormones, (cortical, epinephrine, and growth hormones and others, prioritize 'how to get well'). This well factor-our metabolism will release these hormones as to help you fight an invader/virus/disease.

The consequence to getting these 'super bugs-illness' will result in blood glucose levels to escalate out of a 'healthy range'. Illness and Ty 1makes you especially susceptible to diabetic ketoacidosis also known as DKA, in Ty1 this can occur very quick.

Hence, the emphasis on preventions, "get the H1N1", and know what to do when and if it illness, (any illness) presents itself:

  • Monitoring blood sugars, (what to do if too high or too low), and ketones (if present)
  • nausea, diarrhea, what type of fluid to use to replace usual carbohydrates
  • insulin adjustments if needed
  • additional concers when one is sick, our though process or ability to make appropriate decisions in our continued heath management may not be as it should. Hope this makes sense. Thanks for calling on dLife.com. Be your best, regards Sue
