Most frequently, diabetics will report tingling, burning or numbness in their feet. Remember, neuropathy can effect any nerves of the body, but feet are a common problem area. Self-inspect your feet everyday. Carefully wash and dry your feet and wear good fitting socks and shoes. Use a mirror to check for any injuries to the bottom of your feet. Wear good shoes or sneakers at all times, Do not go barefooted.
Follow the American Diabetes Association recommendation of seeing a podiatrist at least annually and take off your socks and shoes everytime you visit your primary doctor so the doctor must look at your feet. If you have any unusual nerve problems that cause pain, burning, tingling or even internal problems like poor digestion, ask for a referral to see a neurologist for an evaluation. See a gastroenterologist if you have slow or poor digestion .
