I never took my diabetes serious until now. In the past there has been lots of high blood sugars. As of recent i have high blood pressure and was put on pills to help control that, When I found out about the damage that I have caused myself, I now realize that this chronic illness isn't a joke

Dear ibsmohamed, Thank you for your question about halting the progression of kidney damage caused by your diabetes. Usual treatment of diabetes includes using some medications that can slow or delay kidney disease. These two drugs are ACE inhibitor drugs or the use of ARB medications. ACE inhibitor drugs end in the letters "pril." ARB medications are used when a person cannot handle the side effects of an ACE drug. ARB drugs end in "Sartin'. Examples of ACE's are lisinopril, enalapril, captripril. Examples of a Sartin drug is losartin. Getting your blood pressure under control is very importion to stop your kidney disease. You may need to see an expert in hypertensio or an nephrologist to achieve this goal. Also work on cutting back the amount of sodium in your diet. Second, work on glucose control. You may need to work on things such as attaining the appropriate weight for height, including more activity in your day, taking your medications as prescribed, etc. I really encourage you to work with your physician to get back on track with caring for your life with diabetes. If you need refresher education, ask for a referral to a diabetes educator or diabetes self management education classes. Stay motivated and work hard to take care of your health.

I have CKD - Stage 2 - (60 %), and I'm so happy to be there - weird to say that huh? However, when I was first diagnosed, my GFR was 36% - I was so frightened as my mother died from Kidney failure - but, I have been blessed with a wonderful Kidney specialist (find yourself one - NOW), and, he ran every test he should have. I watch my carbs (my A1c 5.8 - no medications - just natural), I'm overweight and have lost 70 pounds in two concurrent years now (more before that), and my b/p is under control. I watch my protein, SODIUM, potassium and calcium. It's hard - takes me about 2 hours to do menu for next day - but hey - look where I came from and where I am - I'll take Stage 2 - and work hard to stay there too! As we get older, our kidney funtions lessen for many reasons, but if we do what we can to HELP them, all the better. You put a smile on your face - you know 60% means your glass is MORE THAN HALF FULL (so to speak) - Good luck, and remember, it's a battle, and you need to decide what you are going to do to win it. I'm in your corner!!! In closing, my Nephrologist tells me he wishes all his patients were like me - and that if I keep up what I'm doing, I could live to be 93 and die of old age, and NEVER be on DIALYSIS - now, to me, that's an Incentive for working hard. Blessings, Sue Randolph
