Asked By: wheber2

Background Info Hide
My Grandmother, Mother and Aunt all had breast cancer. My Mother is currently getting tested to see if it was hormone pills or genetics that caused the cancer. We should know something in two weeks. I'm curious to know if since my insulin cells are distroyed by autoimmune if it could also kill off any cancer cells?

Dear wheber2. Thank you for your question regarding the destruction of cancer cells. I don't think that an autoimmune disease will destroy cancer cells. Particularly breast cancer cells. Autoimmune diseases specifically destroyed targeted cells. That is the basis for many diseases. Knowing that you may be at higher risk for breast cancer should signal to you to do all the preventive self-checks and imaging as recommended by your physician. Mammograms and some of the newer technology are improving how quickly breast cancer can be found and then treated. It is scary when you face an unknown foe, but as medicine keeps finding out more about diseases and how to treat them, the rate of death from cancer continues to go down. So, stay in close contact with a physician that knows your family history and can refer you for proper screening tests.
