"High blood glucose reading for the past week. Normal? Or something to be concerned about?"
Asked By: giannamariexox

Background Info Hide
I've had type 1 diabetes for about a month now and I feel that i have been on top of it (testing blood glusose 4-6 times a day, counting my carbs, getting correct amount of insulin shots), but just recently my physician at Yale New Haven changed my doses according to how much I eat (1 unit for every 8 carbs ect.) and my BG has not been under 150 in a little bit over a week and has been in the high 200's. Im not sure if I am doing something wrong or if it just needs to be adjusted. Any avice or input would been great.

Dear giannamariexox, Thank you for your question. I would recommend a follow-up visit with your doctor to do further adjustment of your insulin doses. I appears that your insulin to carbohdyrate ratio may not be optimal for you. If you have not attended Diabetes Self Management Education/Training classes, I would also recommend that you ask your doctor for a referral to these classes, taught by diabetes educators. The classes will help you understand the factors that can affect your blood sugars and help you feel more comfortable with Type 1 diabetes. You need to know as much as possible about Type 1 diabetes in order to be sure you are limiting your risks of diabetes complications. The more you learn, the easier it will become for you.
