"A1C is 6.3.. GP internist recomends actos..my endochronologist says no. Are there specific guidelines based solely on A1C reading? should I take it?"

40 lbs. overweight,. other meds are 10 mg crestor and synthroid ,112 mcg

Dear millenniumnonie, Thank you for writing into dLife. Unfortunately, there is not concensus regarding which medications to prescribe at what stage of diabetes. Actos is an insulin sensitizer. It helps your own insulin to work better so glucose can enter your body's cells. Metformin also is an insulin sensitizer. It usually costs less than Actos, so is often the drug of choice in early diabetes. Other physicians may say you don't need any medication at this time. They would recommend losing weight, if you are overweight, and exercising on a regular basis. An A1c of 6.3 is good. Most of my patients are aiming for 6.5-7.0
