"Please help, I have tried everything and cannot lose weight, is there hope for me or am i stuck being 190lbs forever? "

Background Info Hide
I am type 1 diabetic, have been for 34 years. I had a hysterectomy ten years ago. I was thin until the hysterectomy; I gained 60lbs in six months. This was with riding my bike nonstop for 5 miles a day and working out at the gym five days a week. The weight still kept coming. I have tried every diet, with no weight loss. I have seen dietitians and talked with my Dr. I even went all Vegan. Granted my cholesterol is wonderful, but I cannot lose the weight. It is very frustrating. i thought about lap band, but i don't think it will work because I already eat only 1000 calories a day and still don't lose weight. ON top of all this my hair started falling out of my head, and I have bald spots on my arms. Sample of my diet breakfast: glass of OJ, small banana lunch: sliced cucumber and onions with vinegar dinner: spinach (steamed), Vegan Patty, salad with vinegar. snack: fresh broccoli and carrots with vinegar.

Hello,

Thanks for bringing your question to dLife.

Weight loss is a challenge for everyone, especially for menopausal women with diabetes. Glad to hear that your cholesterol is wonderful. How about your blood glucose (sugar) level?

Regular vigorously exercise tend to improve body composition so that you have a higher percentage of lean tissues. Lean tissues weigh more than an equal volume of fat.

You did not mention your height. Not eating enough can decrease your metabolism. This means that your body is trying to conserve and use less energy. Eating 1000 calories a day may not provide adequate nutrients. This may explain why your hair is falling out.

I recommend that you talk with a dietitian with whom you feel comfortable. He or she can review your nutritional status and recommend the necessary adjustments to ensure nutritional adequacy.

The primary goal should be better health.

Take care.

It is very hard for a type one to lose weight without taking less insulin. Talk to your doctor about how to take less insulin during exercise and/or a low carb lifestyle. Also talk to them about the possibility of insulin resistance and trying an oral medication for that. My doctor told me that insulin resistance is common in long term type ones because the body will eventually build antibodies against the insulin we inject. I had suspected this for years but all of my previous doctors acted like I was crazy when I mentioned it! I have also noticed that when my BG's are high for extended periods, my hair tends to fall out in clumps. I read somewhere that hair loss can be an indication of not enough insulin in your system.
