Dear dbolash- Thank-you for contacting dLife .com. When a patient is diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes we look at what risk factors they had. From your brief description both ethnicity and obesity played a role in you developing diabetes. Other factors are:
  • diabetes in family members
  • high blood pressure, high cholesterol
  • poly cystic ovary disease

When you asked about genetics, it is in reference to presence of the disease in family members. But keep in mind with proper meal planning, weight control, and activity you can keep the onset of diabetes at bay.

You will always have diabetes but the treatment interventions can be modified with balanced meal planning and activity.

This is an excellent time to have you 12 year old to become involved with healthy age appropriate activity and assist you in healthful meal planning.

Take a look at the Healthy eating Icon on the dLife web site and look at the 7 Self care behaviors to create a healthy household. Healthy regards for best self management.
