Dear janet74801. Thank you for your diet question. This is my advice.... I would ask your physician to refer you to a Registered Dietitian and preferably one who has the Certified Diabetes Educator credential. The Registered Dietitian is qualified to help you design a diet that is appropriate for you! There is no one diet for everyone. If you are overweight, you may well want to limit calories, but there may be an optimal level for you to eat. The dietitian can help you determine this level. Usually carbohdyrates are restricted to some degree in the diet for a person with diabetes. While there are varying philosophies regarding "minimal carbs" versus "a targeted amount of carbohydrates (usually 40-75 grams depending on sex, age, activity, etc.), you may want to read more about each of these strategies before you meet with the dietitian. Then you can have a more informed talk regarding the differences. The dLife website in the information section has articles written on healthy eating for people with diabetes. I encourage you to start there.

low carb for sure! carbs are essentially sugars, so avoiding sugars seem like the best way to go. low calorie diets are good if you have your glucose under control and you don't really need to lose any weight but if you are like me and need to shed a few pounds to control your glucose better, i would go low carb for sure. you can eat larger portions on a low carb diet too, so you actually feel full and satisfied. good luck!
