"What would be an example of the "plate method" for a vegetarian?"
Asked By: petjenkins

Background Info Hide
I was diganosed with type 2 a year ago. I have lost 15 pounds by limiting "white foods', 2nd helpings, sweets and by exercise. I am a 5' 3", 72 year old female. I now weigh 123 lb. My last A1c in Sept. was 6.1. I am taking no meds and want to keep it that way by diet and exercise. I have been a vegetarian for 35 years. I do eat eggs, milk and cheese. Any diet suggestions would much appreciated.

Dear dLife guest:
Congratulations on successfully managing your diabetes. The "plate method" is a very easy and simple way of planning meals and controlling portion sizes. The main idea is to visually divide your plate in 4 equal sections. On one quarter you are going to have your starchy food such as 1 cup of rice, whole grain pasta or corn. On the other quarter, include your protein choice which in your case could be a cup of beans (yes they have carbs but they are a great source of protein and fiber), eggs, or cheese. The rest of your plate should be filled with vegetables (either in the form of salad or steamed veggies). To complete your meal you can add a serving of fruit.
