Glucosamine supplements are taken to relieve symptoms associated with arthritis. The effects of glucosamine on blood glucose (sugar) levels and insulin resistance have been controversial. The initial concerns about use in people with diabetes was based largely on laboratory rat studies noting insulin resistance. More recent human research reports no significant effects (including on hemoglobin A1c levels) in patients with type 2 diabetes.
People with diabetes who are taking glucosamine supplements should check with their doctors. They should also monitor their blood glucose frequently and look for any changes in their blood sugar control.
Take care.
