"Re Prediabetes: How soon after changing diet and exercise will these changes reflect in (hopefully lower) fasting glucose levels?"
Asked By: heytjgu6875
Category: Prediabetes

Background Info Hide
When tested three weeks ago, my fasting glucose level was 113, pre-diabetic. I immediately cut out all added sugar and sweets, and substantially reduced my carb intake. How long should it take before these changes reflect in my fasting glucose level? This will determine when I return to the lab for new tests. Thank you.

Dear heytjgu6875, Congratulations on embracing your risk factors and making diet and lifestyle changes to ward off diabetes. It sounds like you are being very aggressive and I commend your efforts. As for follow-up blood tests, why hurry? It is important that you lose some weight, if you are overweight, and then maintain your diet and lifestyle changes. Personally, I see no urgency to retest. Give it about six months and then reschedule a follow-up visit. Hopefully, you will have normal level fasting glucose ranges and will feel very happy that you worked so hard to achieve that goal.
