I am 50 years male with type 2 diabetes since 1997. Report as of 10/10/09 cholesterol 144, HDL 38, LDL 71 and Trigl: 173. How can I improve my HDL naturally? Is there any particular food that helps increase HDL? Thanks.

Dear dLife guest:
Unfortunately, there are no specific foods that raise HDL levels. However, monounsaturated fats used in the diet, will help improve overall lipid levels by lowering the bad cholesterol (LDL), while maintaining the good one (HDL). Monounsaturated fats are found in vegetable based oils such as CANOLA, OLIVE, and PEANUT oils, along with FLAX seeds (and its oil), and AVOCADOS. Of course these need to used in moderation within a heart healthy diet. The only factor that has been scienfically proven to raise HDL levels is regular exercise. Walking, cycling, swimming or any other type of cardiovascular activity performed at a minimun of 30 minutes per day, at least 5 times a week, is the general recommendation for most people. If you are not exercising regularly already, make sure you get permission from your doctor before starting any exercise program.
