Hello nannyk>br> You are correct that diabetics have a high risk of thyroid problems. The endocrine system is connected. Insulin and and thyroxine are both hormones. Your doctor will order blood tests to see how your thyroid is functioning. The tests are T3, T4 and TSH. Ask your doctor if your thyroid function tests are normal or if they are decreased or elevated. If the thyroid hormone is decreased , medication will be prescribed to keep the hormone in normal range. The medication is called Levothyroxine or Synthroid. If you are put on this medication, your doctor will periodically order tests to be sure the medicine is in therapeutic range. Elevated Thyroid hormone levels is called Graves Disease. This can be caused by Thyroid cancer or by overactive thyroid. Usually the thyroid gland will be irradiated to stop the over produuction of the hormone, then the same medicine , Levothyroxine (Synthroid) will be ordered to keep the hormone in the normal range.

I commend your ability to understand that diabetes effects the body in many ways and is related to other problems that diabetics may have. This example shows the importance of keeping your routine appointments, getting your blood drawn when ordered, and discussing all signs and symptoms you have with your provider every time you visit the doctor.
