Having your 3 year old son diagnosed with diabetes is an over whelming event. Take a deep breath and know that you are not alone. Get as much education as you can and be sure there is a Certified Diabetes Educator on your health care team that you can easily contact with questions and concerns. Contact your local JDRF - Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation - to find a support group.
Islet cell transplants is still considered an experimental treatment. Success has improved over the years with better anti-rejection medication. There are about 17 Medical Centers in the US doing the treatment as research continues. Generally is done for people 18-65 years old with a history of diabetes of about 5 years or more with other complications. Contact your local University Medical Center to see if they are a site.
Take one day at a time and just do your best. Children with diabetes grow up to live very successful, healthy lives! Good blood sugar control is the key.
