Dear triana,

Thank you for writing dLIfe.

It is important to eat a variety of foods on a daily basis to get all the nutrients your body needs for good health. The food you eat should provide enough carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, fiber and water. All these nutrients working together give you the energy you need for a full and productive lifestyle.

Carbohydrate is your body's preferred source of energy and contrary to what many popular fad diets tell us, your body needs carbohydrate and carbohydrate is part of a healthful diet.

Carbohydrate is found in foods like bread, cereal, fruit, vegetables and milk. Often when people tell me they omit carbohydrate from their diet they are referring only to bread and cereal type foods. They are shocked when I inform them that fruit, vegetables and milk are all sources of carbohydrate.

Your doctor certainly didn't mean for you to literally avoid all carbohydrate. But rather to cut down on your intake of bread and cereal type foods, thus eating less carbohydrate.

Foods made with sugar tend to have little or no nutritional value, and are usually high in calories and fat. So, it is a good idea to limit those foods in the diet. The sugar in fruit and milk is naturally occurring and comes with many nutrients, like the fiber in fruit and the calcium in milk. These should be included in the diet.

Your doctor can provide you with clarity on his recommendations. You can also join the Kraft Good Eating program where you will find great recipes, meal plans, news letters and much more. Just clik here to join.

Healthy regards!

If your doctor told you to eat 0 carbs, then that is certainly what he meant! More and more doctors are overcoming the predjudice against low carb diets, especially for diabetics. Eating as little carbs and sugar as possible will help lower your BG and insulin intake, which will also help you lose weight. Google Dr. Richard K. Bernstein, he has a great website with a forum about the benefits of diabetics going low carb. That being said, there is alot you can eat! Just about any kind of meat and most vegetables are good to go with low carb. Also, eggs, cheese, sour cream, cream cheese, etc. It is not a really hard diet to follow if you can stay away from bread, cereal, rice, potatoes, and pasta. Also try googling low carb diets and you will find more recipes than you'll know what to do with! Good Luck!
