Whether you are a health care professional, a friend or a family member, your approach should be the same. In a non-threatening manner ask the patient what she knows about the link between retinipathy and diabetes and verbalize your concerns. Validate her feelings and then ask if she has had previous diabtetes education. Explain the benefits of initial and follow-up diabetes education. I would stress that eductaion leads to better control of diabetes. Control of diabetes may prevent and delay progression of diabetes complications like retinopathy. Diabetes education does not quarantee good diabetes conrol. But, good diabetes control is impossible without diabetes education. Ask the patient if she would consider diabetes education and ask or help to arrange it. But, keep in mind, that the final decision is up to her. Hope this helps.
