If someone has type 1 diabetes then that person will be insulin dependent forever because of beta cell destruction that leads to the pancreas no longer being able to produce insulin. So, it sounds as if the grandson of your aquaintance probably does have type 2 diabetes. Remember, that type 2 there is usually a family history as well as presence of obesity, so insulin resistance is the main problem. When newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes you can enter what's known as the honeymoon phase where the pancreas still makes isulin and thus injected insulin requirements are drastically reduced, but it is very rare and not recommended to completely stop insulin even during this honeymoon phase. There is a lot of confusion out there surrounding diabetes and the different types and names of the types. Remember as far as your granddaughter that the insulin injections she takes are giving her life and the ability to be a normal kid who happens to have diabetes. But with all the advances in types of insulin and diabetes technology there is lots of hope for kids who have type 1 in this day and age. So, keep up the research and you'll be able to help answer questions that your granddaughter will have about her disease.

Maybe the conversation was misunderstood. Could she have meant that he doesn't take shots any more because he's on a pump?

Could be that he is a type 2 but he could be a type 1 in the honeymoon period. Its hard to say without knowing what his status is.
