The answer to your question lies in the fact that, although healthy beta cells co-secrete Insulin and Amylin, synthetic forms of these hormones have dissimilar chemical structure. The solutions in which Insulin and Smylin are suspended are chemically different and contribute to crystallization when they are mixed. Interestingly, it is possible to mix the two drugs for immediate injection (< 15 seconds) prior to crystallization. There is concern for cross contamination of the Insulin/Symlin when using this method and it should not be attempted without discussion with your Doctor. Very low concentrations of Symlin can be mixed with Insulin and simultaneously infused, but the concentrations are so low that the helpfulness is debatable. Further research is necessary in order to develop solutions with chemical properties that allow the drugs to be mixed. The potential for a dual chambered pump, or dual port infusion set may be a more feasible approach. Unfortunately, there seems to be minimal financial support for research in the development of such technologies.
