I am reactive hypoglycemic and have a hard time controlling it. In order to get it to come up I have to eat candy or juice and I am gaining weight eating all the time. I have been told I am prediabetic and would probably get it in 10 years which was 2 years ago. How can I prevent this from happening>

It is not uncommon to have hypoglycemia associated with the prediabetic phase. Most people with hypoglycemia need to eat more frequent small meals/snacks that contain protein and a complex or more slowly digested carbohydrate to PREVENT the episodes. Eating candy or juice really makes it worse as the pancreas over responds to the spike in BS then it goes down again quickly - vicious cycle. The weight gain just increases the insulin resistance associated with the prediabetes. I would recommend an appointment with a dietician who is a Certified Diabetes Educator to help you develop a meal plan that will prevent the hypoglycemia episodes and stabilize or decrease your weight that fits your daily routine. Adding daily moderate activity is also recommended. Over half the people who make lifestyle changes in the prediabetes stage will prevent or at least significantly delay the onset of diabetes. This is your window of opportunity! Prevention is so much better than having diabetes.

I'm not a doctor, of course, but I did have hypoglycemia when I was in my late teens. After that diagnosis, I was put on a very good diet by my then doctor, which carried me for many years diabetes-free. However, after menopause I developed diabetes. I'm now trying gluten-free products just to see if they make any difference in my blood sugar readings. I don't think I have Celiac Disease, however. I'm just curious about it. I have found that a wonderful grain called quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) only raises my blood sugar levels a teeny, tiny 2 points. So, if I were to recommend any carb to you, it would be quinoa.
