Dear dLife reader: Gastroparesis is a chronic complication of diabetes. It is more common when people have lived with diabetes for more than 20 years, especially if it has been poorly controlled. It occurs as a damage to the nerve ending of the gastro-intestinal system. It is also called autonomic neuropathy. The treatment is very individualized, but it has been seen that eating smaller more frequent meals often helps. You must keep a very close look at what you eat, the times you eat, and how different foods affect you. Keeping a written record of your BG and your food intake can help the doctor and/or the dietitian determine whether or not you are eating enough not only to maintain health but also to prevent complications.

I would not call this common but it does happen. Also autonomic neuropathy can affect severals such as heart palpations, diabetic diahrea and a host of other things.. Best thing to do is keep control of your bs readings. I have damage in the small intestine that is severe pain all the time but I dont have your problem, the pain never leaves me.
