Dear Johnswife: Thank-you for contacting dLife. NPH is an insulin that is considered an intermediate acting insulin. It is often given twice a day since it can last up to 12-14 hours. Therefore, if given that way provides 24 hour coverage. It has variable peak times anywhere from 4-8 hours. It is still fairly popular since it can be purchased relatively low cost compared to the new basal non-peaking insulin products Lantus and Levemir.

Glucose testing and how you respond to NPH is important since the peak times are variable. It can often peak not around a meal time and contribute to low blood sugar.

If this insulin is one you are considering, please see a diabetic educator within your health providers office to learn proper administration and side effects.
