"Is an insulin pump a smart/ good choice?"
Asked By: giannamariexox

Background Info Hide
Im 15 and was newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Im taking around 4 shots of insulin a day, and just thinking about if maybe i should use a pump eventually. I'm not sure if i would like the feeling of something being attached to me all the time though.

First off - you are to be commended for being proactive in your diabetes care and educating yourself on options. Insulin pumps are a great tool for many people. The bottom line is what ever is needed for good blood sugar control and preventing complications. Taking 4 shots a day can be a hastle for many people. The pump eliminates that aspect of care. It can provide more flexibility in your routine with better blood sugars due to the ability to have more than one basal rate and a variety of ways to administer boluses. "Being connected" all the time is an issue. Discuss wearing a pump as a "trial" with your physician. That certainly helps with the decision. There is also a pump called the omnipod that is wireless. Explore all your options, but remember you are in control even with a pump. You still have to monitor your blood sugar and count your carbs. See if there is a support group in your area for teens - others like you may provide specific answers about their experience. Best wishes for a long and healthy dLife!
