"I know that non-T1s show no difference in outcomes with or without testing, but how does that work?"
Asked By: amolson
Category: Insulin

Background Info Hide
I have steroid induced diabetes and am on a basal/bolus insulin regime (22/16u AM/PM Levemir, 8:1-15:1 bolus depending on the food) and I can NOT figure out how to tweak in my basal levels without testing more than 3 times a day, which my endocrinologist considers neurotic and unneccessary. I'm having to use 'log to keep my insulin levels up enough during the day to stay awake but then not be so high as to risk a hypo while driving. It's really annoying but without knowning HOW not being a T1 makes me safe from a bad hypo reaction, I really don't trust it. Especially while driving, since without testing I can't even tell if I'm going low. (I'm also hypo-unaware, so I have to be particularly careful.)

Dear Amolson- Obviously you have specific concerns and your physician should respond to them. Perhaps you can ask him to order you a trial CGM continuous glucose monitor that you can wear for a 3-5 day period. This monitors your glucose every 5-30 minutes and then it can be downloaded for both you and your MD to review. This will let him see how your glucose levels are trending. This will also give you the confidence of how you are doing during your daily activities.

Does your MD have a diabetic educator in the office or is there one at your local clinic or hospital? They should be able to assist in making adjustments that will go well with your needs.

Keep up your good self management.
