Background Info Hide
I ended up in the ER 9/10 with keteoacidosis and learned that had Type 1 Diabetes. On 10/6 I started experiencing burning on the soles of my feet. I have an appt with my Podiatrist in 3 weeks but I am very worried that I am starting with neuropathy already. I also seem to have a fungus infection on my feet which I am treating. Should I be experiencing neuropathy symptoms so soon after diagnosis? I have no pain, numbness or tingling - just burning.

I cannot diagnose over the internet, but you need to know that it takes roughly 8 years of uncontrolled diabetes before developing diabetes compliations like neuropathy. Most people with type 1 are diagnosed soon after the start of uncontrolled sugars because their symptoms are more severe and occur more suddenly than those of people with type 2. // The average person with type 2 has had undiagnosed diabetes for 2 years. Also, please be aware that the worst foot complication of diabetes - foot amputation most always occurs in people who have no feeling in their feet. // Considering this information, it is unlikely that your burning is from neuropathy. High blood sugar levels alone can cause burning and other unpleasant sensations in the extremeties. I am so sorry you have to wait to see the podiatrist, but the only way to diagnose your symptoms is to be examined hands on by a qualified health professional. Hope lthis helps. Good luck.

This may or may not be neuropathy in your feet. Endo many times say diabetics are diabetics a long time before dx. Now that may not be your case but in my case I was a diabetic for a long time now looking back at it.
