"Fasting blood sugars are still high"
Asked By: starhill79
Category: Type 2

Background Info Hide
I started Lantus (10 units) on June 8. I stopped Actos two weeks later as my fasting #s were below 100. Two months later I stopped Glipizide XL as my #s were still below 100. I am taking 2500 Metformin. My #'s are now in the 150's. Do you think it could be from stopping Glipizide as I'm not doing anything else different? I am now up to 80 units of Lantus. My A1C before Lantus was 10.0 and 3 months later it was 8.5 so obviously I'm doing something right.

Dear starhill79, Thank you for your question. At my practice, we adjust Lantus insulin according to the morning (fasting blood sugars). It appears as if you have had a lot of adjustments to your regimen. Perhaps you need to stay at the same doses of medication and keep some blood sugar records, meal carbohydrate records, and activitity records. Then your physician would be able to look for patterns and help to adjust your regimen better. The more information you can provide, the easier it is to adjust the appropriate drug/insulin dose. So, start with that and be sure to share the information with your doctor on a regular basis.
