Hi and thanks for writing dLife. Your question is terrific because you may have heard that those with diabetes are also advised to keep track of sodium intake as well as calories, carbohydrates and saturated/trans fats. Sodium/salt does not affect blood sugar readings, however since many with diabetes have or are at risk for having high blood pressure, which is a stress on the kidneys and the heart, keeping sodium intake below 2400 milligrams per day is a very good idea. Most sodium in our diet is found in processed foods, condiments and of course added to our foods as table salt. Unfortunately, when many high sodium foods are regularly eaten, our taste buds get used to the sodium and it is often difficult to change to a lower sodium diet right away. This is a great reason to work with a registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator for help in lowering sodium intake and maintaining good control on your blood sugar, blood cholesterol and blood pressure numbers.
