Dear gayladodson, Have you ever been tested to determine whether you are a type 1 rather than type 2? It would fit the profile that you describe better. The doctor can tell how much insulin you produce and whether antibodies to the beta cells are present. That is what distinguises between Type 1 and Type 2 form of diabetes. If you do have Type 2, you may have a genetic predisposition to diabetes. As we are learning more about the human genome, we are finding genes that may cause some types of diabetes. We also see higher incidence of diabetes in some ethic races. You don't say what race you are, but that can be a contributing factor. So, I recommend that you talk to your provider about possible tests to determine more about your diabetes.

You should have your doctor order blood work such as the GAD test and the C-peptide test. These two should determine what is going on with pancreas and your body's production of insulin. Good Luck.

Just to add to your question both my mother and aunt who were and are 5'4" my aunt weights 80 lbs and is type 2. My mom weighed 100 lbs and was type 2. Many think its all about weight but if runs in our family. You dont fit the so called normal profile of a type 2 but that doesnt mean you couldnt be one. Please as the expert said get tested for type 1 because if you are type 1 and not treated properly it could be very serious.
