Dear sstellma- Thank-you for contacting dLife. Camping and hiking are excellent activities for the physical activity part of the self-care behaviors. You are smart to plan ahead for the trip. Here are some suggestions:
  • make your own trail mix with dried fruit and unsalted nuts
  • take a jar of unsalted peanut better
  • apples travel well
  • good supply of water
  • cans of water pack tuna unsalted
  • unsalted almonds and walnuts
  • foil packs of salmon
  • prepacked 100 calorie snacks low salt
  • glucose tablets
  • Crystal Lite packets
  • prepacked oatmeal or granola
  • crackers or wheat bread
  • protein bars

I focused on non-perishable high protein, high fiber foods and was mindful of the salt due to your high blood pressure. Make sure you monitor you glucose and keep your strips and medicines from extreme weather changes. Good hydration is important and take a bit more food than you plan for days you are going.

    Have a great time.

One of our favorite foods we had while camping was a vegetable soup that Mom makes in the fall. Take all the root vegetables you can get and put them through the food grinder until they are about as small as cole slaw pieces. Simmer over low heat for several hours, adding more water as it evaporates. Add stew meat at the last 30 minutes or so and continue cooking it. After cooling we would then put it in 3 lb. coffee cans that are lined with a zip lock bag. .Freeze it. This can be used as the ice to keep other things cold in the cooler while camping and pull them out one at a time to cook for a tasty dinner! Great served with rolls and drinks.
