Hello MarSnare: The hormonal replacement use of oral Premarin® lists some potential adverse reactions, especially in the face of diabetes; the most common side effects are vaginal yeast infections, vaginal spotting or bleeding, painful menses, or cramping of the legs. Common side effects reported for Premarin® cream include vaginal infections, abdominal pain, and possible headaches.

Diabetes is a chronic disease, (I'm sorry to hear of the repeating infections), diabetes never takes a vacation, and when there is an infection, the body's response will cause elevations in the blood glucose levels, usually requiring additional insulin to keep things under control. If you have been 'too' sweet this environment encourages bacterial growth, it's like the bananas sitting on the kitchen counter, they continue to ripen, sugar content gets more concentrated and the fruit flies come, (sorry for the analogy).

Help that I might offer would include: Considering the history of the UTIs, I'd investigate other avenues of treating the vaginal dryness, maybe a visit/conversation with the Gynecologist: the pain or discomfort from vaginal infections or vaginal dryness can make you more likely to have 'vaginismus.' Vaginismus is an involuntary spasm of the muscles around the vaginal entrance, kegel exercise are identified as a possible treatment. A potential of nerve damage to the cells that line your vagina may be the cause of the vaginal dryness.

  • Get back to the basics, (treating from the inside out), ABC's of diabetes:
  • A1C<7%, blood glucose reading never to exceed 140mg/dl,(small frequent meals may help),
  • Blood pressure levels<140/80mmHg, keep the pressures as normal as possible as to facilitate the healing and effectiveness of the antibiotics,
  • Total cholesterol<200,HDL>50,LDL<100,TG<150mg/dl , is you smoke-please stop,
  • lastly, be your best, activity to 150 min/wk. per PCP OK.
Hope that helps, call on dLife as needed.
