Dear grandaroxanne, There are many medications that can be taken by people with type 2 diabetes. Some are pills and some are insulin. The less expensive insulins are regular, nph, or a mixture of the two called 70/30 insulin. These insulins are pretty cheap. Lantus and novolog are quite expensive and are dosed more often. If you need insulin because you are having very high blood sugars, ask your doctor if you can try 70/30 insulin. This requires two shots per day. You might also be able to add metformin with the insulin and attain better control. I really recommend you sit down with a doctor and get your regimen better worked out. If your doctor doesn't feel confident in treating your diabetes, ask for a referral to a diabetes educator and let them help adjust your medication.

Take a deep breath & another! Stress makes your blood sugar go up. It is very normal to feel overwhelmed when diagnosed plus you don't feel good when your BS is elevated or going up and down (that makes you crabby!). The first thing you need is to be in a Diabetes Self Management class & learn to carb count so you can start to get better BS control and not chase your sugars all day. I also would talk to your physician about being on Novolog or Humalog instead of Regular insulin. It is more predictable. Walmart ReliOn brand is much less expensive. The community answer talked about being on oral medication - but every one's needs are different and you did not say what your BS or A1C results were. Oral medication may not be appropriate for you.
The most important thing is to not give up and ignore taking care of yourself . Good BS control prevents or delays complications - you don't need more problems with your other medical concerns.
You said you changed everything - maybe you need to focus on one or two things to start - such as decreasing your portion size of food & walking 10 minutes every day. There is lots of good general information on the dLife site. Knowledge is a powerful tool. You are not alone - you can do this!

I'm no expert, but I'm type 2 also and only on oral meds. Which is very cheap, at Walmart I get the pills for 4.00, glipizide for a 30 day supply. I am new at this too only since May of this year, and this website has helped me more than the doctor. By reading all different categories I have managed to get my BS under control by trying different suggestions and learning about what foods to eat and not eat. Is this the first thing your Dr. tried, and was your blood sugar really sky high. Mine was 240 when I was diagnosed and I guess that's not really high like 400 or more, but if it was not really that high you might consider asking the Dr. if you really need the insulin or if you could try oral meds. And especially if they are not controlling you BS maybe you are on the wrong ones. I would get a 2nd opinion if possible. Just from my own experience sometimes you have to tell the doctors what you want, and ask them for it. I had to ask for my meter and when I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, my lisinopril wasn't controlling it very well, so I asked for a diuretic. He didn't want to give me one, but as soon as I started it my blood pressure is perfect now. Tell your doctor the same thing you said on here about how unbearable it is. I think he may have started out the opposite way of my doctor by over medicating you, instead my doctor started out with the lowest he could 5 mg of Glipizide a day and then it was increased to twice a day and now its under control. Good luck. Just don't be afraid to ask questions and let them know how you feel about it.

Ok you have a whole lot on your plate. You have been doing this all of 3 months. You say your type 2 but your on a heavy insulin regimin. I see no mention of oral meds, are you limiting carbs or eating to many. Eating carbs raises blood sugar, so cut out refined foods and you can cut back on your shots. Get more exercise it helps burn blood sugar. Diabetes doesnt have to make your life hard. You dont mention how high your bs is but its a balance of food, exercise and a few other things. Good luck I suggest the type 2 forum on dlife for great info. The reason you are crabby is your bs are high, that plays havoc with our body, get that down and things will be better.
