Dear towerofpower, Sometimes medical care is impacted by the cost of doing the care. Blood glucose meters can be obtained for little or no money through drugstores, etc. It is the strips that cost. Many cost .75 - $1.00 each. If your blood sugars are good and you are not taking medication that can lower your blood sugar quickly, there are doctors that prefer to delay testing. They check your glucose when you have a doctor's appointment. On the othe hand, the results of testing your blood sugars can give you valuable feedback regarding the effects of eating certain foods or amounts of carbohdyrates. They can also tell you alot about your glucose increases throughout the day. Again, the drawback is that the strips are expensive and not covered entirely by most insurances.

My doctor didn't prescribe me a meter to test with, but I was feeling so terrible that I got these cheap meters at CVS and Walgreens and started testing on my own. I found out my insurance would cover meters and supplies so I called the supply company by looking in the yellow pages and they set up to call my doctor. I also called my doctor to tell them the company would be calling and he ordered me the meter and supplies. It is much better with testing because it helps me know what to eat and what not to eat to keep my BS under control. I guess some doctors just don't realize Type 2 needs to test also. Without testing we are in the dark as to what our BS are and from eating what foods. Probable just need to tell the doctor you want to start testing the BS at least twice a day if not more.

Can I be honest with you, I want to take doctors that say that and shake them silly. My mom could not test and was type 2, there were no meters back in the 60s so no clue what her bs was. She went blind from not being able to test, had to go on insulin still no meters thats a crap shoot. I think any doctor that states its not necessary out to lose there licensce thats how strong I feel about it.
